My Story

There are a number of reasons why I started this blog, the obvious being that I love to cook…and eat. More importantly, the true reason I started this blog was out of frustration. I may be “traditional” by today’s standards, but I truly believe there are certain characteristics, skills and mannerisms that women should have. While I believe in women being strong and independently able to care for themselves - advancing in the workplace and excelling in positions of power, to me, there is nothing more beautiful, wholesome and natural than a woman who also takes pride and finds joy and excitement in keeping a warm and inviting home.
It’s 2012 and we live in a society where instead of looking up to mothers, doctors, lawyers and politicians, young girls are finding role models in basketball and mob wives, bad girls and girls named by physical characteristics vying for the love of a rap star. The media has bred a generation that embraces controversy and the attention it brings. I’ll never knock another person’s hustle, but when low morals, scandal and sex cover television screens and magazine covers across the country it’s the equivalent of a company monopolizing a market. Do we want these “personalities” having a monopoly over our social market? There are some great examples of women on television, music and media – but those examples get cut exponentially for women of color. Why can’t I turn on the television and see a YBF (young black and fabulous) woman doing something positive and meaningful?
Do we really want young girls to grow up thinking life as an adult woman is all about clubs, fighting, drinking, jumping from relationship to relationship and trading monogamy for financial security? I, for one, do not. I want real women with real values for my future daughters look up to. If we can get women all over the world blogging, talking, acting, singing, writing, and living their real lives with integrity, wit and a dash of humor then I think we’ve got a pretty damn good shot at making sure our daughters have some role models.
I want to be a part of a movement that makes it cool to be a woman and embrace all of the beautiful, strong, gentle, kind and humble qualities that define womanhood. So I hope you enjoy my blog, try some of the recipes, take a few extra minutes to make a plate pretty, serve someone a meal and get that feeling of pride when they ask for seconds, or feel that sense of accomplishment when you have leftovers to take for work and save yourself a $10 lunch.

I admire your courage and your strength to speak out and take action for women today. I remember a time when little girls looked up to their mothers. Our mothers were remarkable women. We have to take back our homes and our children. Thank you for starting the movement. You have a new follower.
